I wonder about that - I guess it depends what you mean by a "socialist state". I would say that the post WWII Labour Government in Britain was an example of successful socialism. It has taken successive governments more than fifty years to dismantle the welfare state which it created in response to the Beveridge Report. Something similar is true of Gough Whitlam's government in Australia in the early 1970s, which was unsuccessful in ensuring its own survival, but gave the country Medicare.
