I wouldn't say everyone's been 'heartbroken' before. Heartbroken implies that they trusted someone so deeply and then were betrayed, whether by a family member, friend or lover. I'd say everyone's been 'hurt' by someone before, meaning that they know that people can be cruel, stupid, selfish or so on, but not to the point where it affected them so forcefully that something about them changed dramatically. Being hurt makes your world-wise. Being heartbroken makes you different.
