Old White Menfrom Old White MenI was such a strange boyForty years or so back thenFat with big thick ol’ glassesTrouble making friendsCruising thru my neighborhoodCould easily have come to no good endTill I stumbled into the workshopsOf old, white men“Call your mother, you can stay”That’s about all they’d ever sayThen they’d lift the topOff some old wooden boxWhere inside lay some gemMade of string and springsAnd wood and glueRight then and there I’m sure I knewFirsthand the raw ingredientsOf old white menOld white menGet teary eyed December 7thOld white menSalute every flag they seeOld white men,Didn’t care how cool I couldn’t beA drop of glue will do toHelp it mend“Put the cap on when you’re thru” sayOld white menIt was all ball peen hammers, calipersDovetail joints and acetoneTubes and printed circuitsScrews and spokes and wheelsThe difference tween truth and opinionWhen you’re old enough, be sure to voteAnd never trust a womanWearing more than 3 inch heelsOld white menLiving crosscut, chainsaw livesOld white menThey don’t talk back to their wivesOld white men, thanks to themI can sharpen your kitchen knives with this stoneSome times when I’m aloneI wonder what became ofOld white menDo they synchronize their watchesAs on and on time marches?Do their belts need extra notchesAs their waistlines grow big & ‘round?I call their wives up oftenAnd I carry their husband’s coffinsAs these grey hairs of my ownChase me downOver the years I outgrewMy awkward situationWent to college, joined a causeBecame the Black Man I never wasAnd over the years I learned to viewOld white men with suspicionI’d heard the world was run to ruinBy old white menLast Thursday I was hunched overMy Briggs and Stratton mowerTrying to adjust the carburetorWhen this kid come bendin’ my earAlways bugging me when I’m workingSo I say “Make yourself seem useful, sonClean the carbon off that sparkplugWipe it down and hand it here.”Old white menLook me squarely in the eyesOld white menThey looked right past my skinOld white men,I can hear them oh so clearly“Are you gonna just stand thereWith that sanding block, sonOr make it so the pieces fit again??”

That was great! I want to cry for the loss of those many instances of humanity white men, once had. Now it is just noise and confusion. I would sit with an "old white man" as mentioned in the song, without prejudice and in full comfort.

I'll never get enough of Vance Gilbert. And seeing as how he does a show in Toronto, Canada only every so often Youtube has become a fantastic place to see songs that aren't featured on his albums. Thanks for adding this. When I was at his show this spring I only wished I was less self-conscience and filmed everything, but I didn't.

Was introduced to this song at The Swannanoa Gathering about three weeks after this was shot... The audience wept openly. This is one of the best snapshots of Americana I've ever heard. It speaks of honor, integrity, values, and color-blindness. Magnificence.
