My elder bother bought this album in 1978 when just released and as a impressionable 11 year old it blew my mind.Superlative fretwork from  Eddy Van Halen and shit hot production-shame after this nothing else came close really perhaps some of 1984

The best debut album opener of all time? Maybe. That little high-pitched piano key sounding glissando he does after the bass at the beginning is perfect and one of the most amazing little throw-ins ever. It has been claimed many times that this song is Satanic. That would certainly bother me if I thought that were true. Also, the Frankenstrat bicycle paint strips on EVH's guitar are supposedly connected to the dark side of the occult. I have my doubts about that, and it may be bullshit. I believe that the old phrase "runnin' with the devil" just means that they live life on the edge and flirt with danger, crime, excess, and such. But, really, that's just over-the-top VH silliness, probably. Van Halen just seems like innocent fun to me more than anything. Just pure joy of being alive. In any case, this is one of the best hard rock songs ever, and VH would have several tracks on that list.
