AT LAST! After all these years (41 to be precise) a contemporary video performance by Polly. Released in late summer 1974 this was a turntable hit in the UK. Despite several TV appearances to promote this great Diana Ross/Jean Terrell inspired Motown/disco track failed to enter the top 40, stalling just outside. It did go on to become a top 20 Billboard Hot 100 hit in spring 1975. At the same time she did enjoy chart success with a top 10 disco cover of ABBA's Honey Honey as one half of Sweet Dreams. All very controversial as she appeared on Top of the Pops to perform the hit "blacked up"- although remember at that time David Carradine was playing in Kung Fu and the Black & White Minstrel Show was still a ratings hit on Saturday Nights with the guys appearing in "black face" Al Jolson minstrel style. Thankfully we have progressed since then"You're My Number One" was a great follow up but got little BBC Radio 1 airplay- the kiss of death in the 70's. She went on to enter the BBC Song for Europe contest to choose the UK entry for the Eurovision Song Contest as a solo artist with "Do you Believe In Love at First Sight"- later recorded by Dionne Warwick and as one half of the duo Sweet Dreams- yes 2 entries in the same contest! A vastly under appreciated singer who should have achieved greater chart success.

I used to LOVE this song when I was a kid-- it sounded like the song Diana Ross was afraid to sing.....classic 1-hit wonder in the US!

This used to be very popular to dance to on the jukebox in Costello's nightclub, in Kellett Street, Kings Cross, Sydney, forty years ago! Polly did come down under, about 1976 I think it was, and appeared on Countdown with Molly Meldrum. ;)

Some drum echoes there of Glitter's "Rock and Roll".

Sounds great, and surprisingly fresh, it been decades since I've last heard this. Strikes me now that Polly had been listening to Jean Terrell.
