Cette chanson a d'abord été écrite par ceux qui se sont battus contre la couronne britannique, pour un parlement responsable et pour la république du bas-canada. Ces gens qu'on a traité comme des criminels de guerre et qu'on a déporté à la suite  de la rébellion de 1837-1839... L'esprit de la chanson est là. Ce n'est pas vraiment un hymne au multi-culturalisme !Je suis quand même d'accord pour dire qu'il y a eu également des gens au haut-canada à se battre pour la même cause.
