Midi isn't a sound, its a note. It's like the digital notation of a musical score. Its the ink and paper. In order to get a sound, the midi data has to be read by a digital instrument. This instrument can be anything from a simple sine wave generator to a digital recreation of a professional orchestra. Though to be fair, the commodore 64 had its own unique language for sounds, so it didn't use midi. It is possible nowadays to mod it and give it midi functionality but that is pretty hard to do.

@whatsthatthing MIDI is "just" an interface standard to synchronize musical instruments and send notes, keys, etc. through a cable. MIDI samples are sound files that a MIDI synthesizer uses to actually play those data. They are digital samples; this distinctive sound however comes from analogue (FM) synthesis.

@whatsthatthing yes, yes. but the 64 use an FM generator chip, MIDI was only just emerging in the professional market. so you are correct in saying it sounds like the 64, but wrongly assuming this has anything to do with MIDI.
