Hi all

Found the original video on youtube, but it had no sound (?) but it was videoed well enough (uploaded by ptdwilson) so I decided to add the audio from the IEM recording of the same concert (that's doing the rounds at the moment) and it's worked really well!

This performance is a great understated version of One Tree Hill and Bono is on top form. The Edge pulls off a gentler sublime solo (which Bono appreciates) and it all makes for an excellent performance by the band.

For people that don't know about IEM recordings, they can be recorded by scanners picking up a band members radio signal to their personal IEM (In Ear Monitor), but can also be tapped into by plugging into the mixing desk/soundboard. IEM recordings differ in sound from straight soundboard recordings as they contain the feed from the sound crew so you get to hear instructions and count-ins by the crew. Also noticeable is the sound of a 'ticking' metronome - this is to help keep the band members in time with each other -- this 'ticking' puts off a lot of collectors and fans from listening to this these types of recordings.

Another bad point with IEMs is that they are only from one band member's feed so you do get to hear the other band members, but they're usually lower in the mix. You also tend not to get too much crowd noise as IEMs are personal monitors so only pick up what's coming through -- which can contain some crowd noise, but its usually very low in the mix.

Anyways, hope ya enjoy it!

Couple corrections on your description.  They don't use scanners.  It's well known that U2 uses Sennheiser brand monitor systems.  So, you only need to bring a Sennheiser receiver to the show (which would be frowned upon) and you can tap into any one of the band members' monitor mix.  They pipe the click track through the IEMs along with the count-in which already pre-recorded throughout each song to cue the vocals after instrumentals.  The rest of the backing track - keyboards, some vocal parts, etc.. - are sent out to the audience.  It's also key to keep the entire show - lights, smoke, video, etc... - in time as well.

I work with IEM's depending who the artist is. Usually, the IEM mixes contain only certain instruments/vocals/tracks, depending on the artist's preferences. Example, the drummer might only want Kick, Snare, Click track, Bass and Vocals in his/her IEM mix. Bass guitarist might just want Kick, Snare, Bass and Vocals in his/hers...etc. Never heard of using a scanner to record their IEM mixes before. U2 has their mixes recorded on a nightly basis through Pro Tools.

@dadoftwins031404 Yep. Keeps him in time with the band and helps with added segments to the songs like snippets and extended endings and intros.

@LightMast: Remember, for U2, timing is more complicated because Edge's delay settings are set to work at a certain BPM (beats per minute). For example, Pride and Bad are dotted 8th note delays and are set to be such at a certain tempo. Larry has to be on the exact tempo that Edge's delays require. In short, Edge's settings are dictating the tempo. With a clicktrack, Edge does not have to stomp his foot to tell Larry what tempo he is playing to be in sync with the delays.

@LightMast This sounds like Bono's IEM. I was listening to a IEM soundcheck and it didn't have clicks and Bono asks for them...

IEM mixes fucking suck.... and I'll have to say that as much as I love bootlegs, I kind of agree that IEM recordings are an invasion of the band's personal space. You're taping something that was never meant to be heard by anyone other than the band members themselves. It's like reading someone's diary or wiretapping their phone... Not cool...

Thats not the point i think,... The idea is that the solo perfectly fit on the song, and, like we all know, he plays simply 90% of the time. thats the beauty of it i think sorry for my english

the iem sound in the monitor mixer or basck satage mixer, and this sound is very different to the general sound, so in this mixer goes the click and this sounds for the iem, in side, and in the other sound mixer, sounds like U2 concert, :), by t way, the click of u2 sounds like a hi hat, its more confortable

Cool posting! What an insight! I've always wondered how they always seem to be doing the right thing at the right time. I put it down to endless rehearsals... Thanks..

The count in from 4:51 seems a bit fast to me which consequently affected the pacing at the end...still amazing though how it all works!
