I thought NLOTH was totally brilliant, and counted as 'ballsy'. There were surely some mass-appeal songs (you know, stuff like GOYB, Crazy Tonight, Stand Up Comedy, as opposed to the clearly fab trio of NLOTH, Magnificent, Mof S, and then too Unknown Caller and Breathe, which were also great and rather risky as U2 songs), that could have worked better. Harder to find the story line in this album, but then life can be like that and some of that sentiment can be heard in the songs themselves!

Am I weird to like *both* aspects of U2? I think they can and still do make monumentally great broadly-appealing songs that are not merely 'safe' but also much more interesting and well crafted than most of what's out there in the world of 'pop' music... And I love the more experimental stuff too (love zooropa and pop! maybe not as perfectly totally as AB, but still). All of it more than about selling songs, but still they feel they need to sell them for it all to work as intended, you know?

Well each to their own and i'm not going to tell someone to change their opinions but after being hyped for ages as a return to the more experimental side of U2, that album was anything but. I'm not saying there aren't a few good songs on there (NLOTH, MOS and the 2 you mentioned) but none of them are musically challenging in any way compared to songs like Lemon, Numb, Mofo, Miami (and many more i could mention). I do totally agree that it was 100 times better than ATYCLB & HTDAAB though!

I'll grant you the 'Pop' album was a step in the right direction but the two albums after bored me rigid and if you ever needed an example of a 'safe' album then look no further than 'All' and the 'Atomic Bomb' album. They lost me completely then but 'No Line' had some great rock out tracks such as the title track, 'Breathe' and 'Magnificent'. I thought that album was a return to the more interesting side of U2 and pulled me back to them after 14 years or so.

ha seriously?! you think NLOTH has balls?!? One of the safest albums ever - all they've been bothered about since 2000 is selling billions of albums and trying to have number one singles (see bono's recent comments about what U2 apparently needs to do to survive...) In the 90's they made brave, boundary pushing, different sounding, interesting music and that was why they USED to be my favourite band ever...

I think this would sound good in an arena. Here's hoping they bring it back.

Wow, in the days before everyone in the audience had an HD camera. Makes these videos so rare and special. This song was only played twice and this was the second and last time they played it!

Much better than the Vegas version, however this was the last time U2 ever played this song live. IMO, it would've served the song better to speed up the tempo and add in some of synth loops from the album version into the background. I can see why they dropped it if they were going to play it like this.

One of my favorites from the Pop album.

This song is amazing, so fresh and so cool, i just think that like many of the Pop songs it was not the right mix, for instance the live versions of Please are far better than the shy mellow version inthe album

wow this is infinitely better than the las vegas version! shame this is the last time they ever played it cos the song was really starting to come together by this point - they should've stuck with it.... ps: and they should start making music with balls again too...
