"You are too rich for hate and I am too poor to love" That line hit me hard. It makes perfect sense. The people he's talking about are not rich in terms of money, but happiness. He feels as if he cannot love because he does not possess this happiness and feeling of wholeness. In a sense he envies the bliss that these people have found. I truly can relate to what David is saying in this song, and this line in particular.

I also don't think that the writer was just talking about material possessions. Perhaps they were talking about family unity, personal confidence, etc... who knows?? However, at the end of the song, they talk about men from the west. I take that as from California or Hollywood, maybe people who were born into fame or money who can buy their way out of problems, etc...
