Tony had some great recordings in the fifties. This was his first for Columbia Records in 1950. It never charted and is over looked by most

Bennett fans.

In 1950, Tony Bennett made his first recording, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” Bennett had used the song, from the 1934 movie “Moulin Rouge,” to audition for Columbia Records. The record began Bennett’s 40-plus years with Columbia. He hit No. 1 the following year with “Because of You.”

I would have so much more respect for America if they still produced music like this.

This is production is best enjoyed in a satirical scope. Very bold for 1950!

I like the song and Tony. But the speed is way too fast for the sentiments being expressed. And the instrumentals here are nearly dominating his voice. Sounds like he's being forced to keep up with the orchestra. I' suggest you listen to Billy Ekstine version to hear a much more mellow and commanding vocal arraingment.

Tony signed with Columbia Records in early 1951, His first record was "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams", It went nowhere. two other recordings followed with the same results. They were thinking of dropping the young singer but gave him one more chance which was "Cold Cold Heart" and "Because Of You" a two sided hit. The rest is history, "Boulevard" was recorded again but never was charted.

Its funny that you say this is overlooked (presumably in America) because I'm a 19 year old from England and the only 2 songs that we know is that "fly me to the moon" one and this, It's one of my favourite songs from the olden days :)

Sinatra called him "a singer's singer." Thanks for this particular version. I like it much better than the original her recorded.
