Ton Koopman was born in Zwolle in 1944. After a classical education he studied organ, harpsichord and musicology in Amsterdam and was awarded the Prix d'Excellence for both instruments. Almost from the beginning of his musical studies he was fascinated with authentic instruments and a performance style based on sound scholarship.

Even before completing his studies he laid the foundations for a career as a conductor of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music and this fascination with the Baroque era led him in 1969, at age 25, to establish his first Baroque orchestra and, in 1979, to found The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra followed in 1993 by the Amsterdam Baroque Choir.

When he ornaments and varies the melody, you sense it is coming directly from the Bach tradition. It's like a channeling of an era and the Bach Family.

Mooi! Niemand speelt ornamented zoals Ton! Fantstisch zoals altijd!

Mr. Koopman has been my favorite interpreter of Bach on harpsichord of all time. I'm still bewildered how so many can prefer Gould and Tureck to the correct approach to this music. His performance of the Bach Violin Sonatas with Monica Huggett is peerless and not to be missed.

Very expressive. But dear cameramen. We want to see the hands more than anything else please!

Beautiful. He plays with such inner joy that blooms outward from the instrument.

Ton Basically dismissed Leonhardt's techniques, he kept fingering, but that is not really Leonhardt's idea.

@Totma11 How is Ton Koopman not part of the Leonhardt school? Leonhardt was his teacher.

The instrument possessed of a nicely parched fundamental with an overtone series that in possessing braces flattened exclusively to excess of the intervals it it supposed to sing doesn't quite succeed in being luminescent. The player gives a lovely shaded performance that is remarkably fresh & full of surprise when compared to the school of Leonhardt- which always gives a 3 hour advance notice before playing a note so lofty and fatigued upon arrival that it seems like a frozen carcass. Bravo!
