Tommy Roe - Sheila 1969

Original 1962

(US # 1, UK # 3, DE # 9)

Sweet little Sheila, you'll know her if you see her

Blue eyes and a ponytail

Her cheeks are rosy, she looks a little nosey

Man, this little girl is fine

Never knew a girl like-a little Sheila

Her name drives me insane

Sweet little girl, that's my little Sheila

Man, this little girl is fine

Me and Sheila go for a ride

Oh-oh-oh-oh, I feel all funny inside

Then little Sheila whispers in my ear

Oh-oh-oh-oh, I love you Sheila dear

Sheila said she loved me,

she said she'd never leave me

True love will never die

We're so doggone happy just bein' around together

Man, this little girl is fine

Never knew a girl like-a little Sheila

Her name drives me insane

Sweet little girl, that's my little Sheila

Man, this little girl is fine

Me and Sheila go for a ride

Oh-oh-oh-oh, I feel all funny inside

Then little Sheila whispers in my ear

Oh-oh-oh-oh, I love you Sheila dear

Sheila said she loved me,

she said she'd never leave me

True love will never die

We're so doggone happy just bein' around together

Man, this little girl is fine

Oh, this little girl is fine

Yeah, this little girl is fine

Listen to the drums at time mark ":57". This was the song that got me excited about playing drums. My Uncle Don gave us his record player and boxes full of 45's. I played this record so many times, over and over and over. My sister Debbie got really tired of hearing it. She ripped it off the record player one day and flung it like a frisbee across the room - said she was sick of hearing that song. Well that record was a 'smash hit' at our house. It didn't survive the crash. My parents told me to learn how to play the clarinet, if I wanted to play an instrument. I tuned out on music for several decades instead.Vampire Weekend's song "Unbeliver's" has drumming that reminded me it wasTommy Roe's song "Shelia" that first got my heart pounding for drums! It still has that effect on me.

By the looks of the lettering in the back, I think the clip came from "The Midnight Special", which ran on NBC from 1973 to 1981. According to TV.com, the clip came from an episode hosted by Roy Orbison on February 15, 1974, in which Tommy sung this plus two other of his hits, "Everybody" & "Jam Up Jelly Tight".

@JoeTheLion188 Hey...forgive an old woman for having a senior moment. Wish I had a picture of Tommy when he rode his motorcycle over to my house in the late 50's or early 60's. He took my little sister for a ride, and she still has the scar where she burned her leg on the manifold.

Notice he's strumming 8 beats to the measure, just like Buddy did on Peggy Sue. Not very many do that. Great song.
