.......I never saw the white line, 'til I was leaving you behind......."San Diego Serenade"I never saw the morning 'til I stayed up all nightI never saw the sunshine 'til you turned out the lightI never saw my hometown until I stayed away too longI never heard the melody, until I needed a song.I never saw the white line, 'til I was leaving you behindI never knew I needed you 'til I was caught up in a bindI never spoke 'I love you' 'til I cursed you in vain,I never felt my heartstrings until I nearly went insane.I never saw the east coast 'til I move to the westI never saw the moonlight until it shone off your breastI never saw your heart 'til someone tried to steal, tried to steal it awayI never saw your tears until they rolled down your face

Simple but immensely poignant and beautiful. One of the best songs ever written, by anyone

Its because people who likes Tom Waits are adults and mature people who knows that song should have a beautiful meaning and not just auto tune effects with some teenager repeating the same words over and over again Tom is a blessing in times like this

You're lucky, I only discovered Waits when I was 19!

I discovered Waits a couple of days ago and fell in love with his music head over heels... I can't let go of it, and when I do, it goes on playing in my head. Moving one like that, making you cry and then smile, is the greatest thing music can do. I bow to this man.

A long, long time ago I cried bitter tears playing this song over and over. It still brings back that feeling even now, when she's a distant memory. Probably the best expression of loss that I've ever heard.
