Tom Waits is a songwriter and poet truly in a class by himself. If he had chosen to be a writer of prose and fiction (in my opinion) he would be up there with Steinbeck and Eugene O'Neil, and the other icons of the twentieth century. His songs are stories that cut so deep you can't turn away. Complete with baggage and warts he is intensely human and to my mind braver than his peers. He marches to his own drummer, and if you can forgive the mixed or mangled metaphor, with respect, it is not Bob Dylan.

I broke up with this girl recently. We were quite good together, but I felt something was missing. It was strange to me, because I thought and think she was very beautiful and we never fought or anything. We're friends now, but it's a bit confusing and we've had sex a couple of times. Just yesterday we were in the car coming back from ballroom dancing and I put Tom Waits on the car radio, this song came along -- I'd heard it before, but I had yet to listen closely to the lyrics. We were talking about the music and I started humming the chorus, I told her this was a great song to sing to and that it made me want to play guitar.Today, I figured I'd play the song, so I grabbed my guitar, looked up the chords and lyrics and gave it another listen, reading along. Turns out it was exactly what I felt when I broke up with her.I put my guitar away again.

I can hear the sentiment of Stephen Collins Foster.

I liked his voice so much better than the gruffer, raspier stuff in his later career.

"I'm singing this song, it's time it was sungI've been putting it off for a while,But it's harder by now, 'cause the truth is so clearThat I cry when I'm seeing you smile. So goodbye, so long, the road calls me dearAnd your tears cannot bind me anymore,And farewell to the girl with the sun in her eyesCan I kiss you, and then I'll be gone.Every time that I tried to tell that we'd lost the magic we had at the start,I would weep my heart when I looked in your eyesAnd I searched once again for the spark. So goodbye, so long, the road calls me dearAnd your tears cannot bind me anymore,And farewell to the girl with the sun in her eyesCan I kiss you, and then I'll be gone.I can see by your eyes, it's time now to goSo I'll leave you to cry in the rain,Though I held in my hand, the key to all joyHoney my heart was not born to be tamed. So goodbye, so long, the road calls me dearAnd your tears cannot bind me anymore,And farewell to the girl with the sun in her eyesCan I kiss you, and then I'll be gone.So goodbye, so long, the road calls me dearAnd your tears cannot bind me anymore,And farewell to the girl with the sun in her eyesCan I kiss you, and then I'll be gone. Can I kiss you, and then I'll be gone, can I kiss you, and then I'll be gone."

It appears he was listening to a lot of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen when he recorded this.
