Vocally I guess this version is better. But this has an inconsistant tune and Bruce really sounds like the characters he's singing about.

Im incredibly bias towards Bruce, cos well, the man's the greatest person born in the 20th century, but this version is to much better than his. Im not a fan of much of the Devils And Dust album though, so not surprising i prefer this interpretation.

My favourite song of all time and Tom Jones does an amazing cover here.I grew up knowing him as the creepy old sex bomb guy so to hear this was a shock, absolutely beautiful.

I have everything that's ever been released by Bruce. I think Tom had Otis Redding in mind, as the arrangement as a whole echoed the great records of the Stax era in Memphis. Being the musical genius he is, I'm not even sure Bruce imagined it being done this way. I want to be moved emotionally through his words AND the music. So, way to go Tom - I think Bruce would be proud of this version!

I disagree completely. The Southern Gospel horns are great because it gives it a flavor of the region of the country that the song takes place in. I think it gives the song an opportunity to crescendo while giving it contextual flavor.

Bruce did a wonderful job in creating this song but I just feel that Tom tells the story better. It's such a great vocal.
