I really like Todd Snider. I really like Dr. Hook.If Todd was 30 years younger, he would've been part of the Medicine Show.

+harley9967 I didn't realize he was belittling Slash for being in a bar at 9AM. As far as I could tell, he didn't mention the time. He was giving what is known as an anecdote. Wouldn't you think it strange to see a guy dressed up like that in a bar?

+Rhino32225 the fork and knife line are snider's. From Guthrie's song 'Pretty Boy Floyd' :Yes, as through this world I've wanderedI've seen lots of funny men; Some will rob you with a six-gun,And some with a fountain pen.

Who are you kidding Todd? Two of you are in a bar at 9 am but only one of you is belittling the other about it in front of thousands (or is it 100's?) of people. So who is the real dickcheese? Let's face it, your pseudo-thrift store get-up is just as calculated as Slash's look is. You're coming off just a tad hypocritical. I love the song though, even though guns & roses were never part of the grunge scene. Poetic licence I suppose. Just play a train song asshole.

Jesus, it's called Talkin' Blues, there's only about 400,000,000 songs in the same format in the history of folk music.

Todd knows Jerry Jeff Walker, so it's not a coincidence. Check out John Prine's 'Jesus, the missing years' for a similarity as well (Rome... Italy that is.... etc). But Todd's version is fantastic too, and certainly Todd's credentials as a songwriter are unassailable. I like all of those songs, and I like this one especially. And thanks for tipping me off to Ramblin Scramblin. I like that one too!

Knew the Dylan song, looking up the knife lyric, however, I only found another Dylan song (Talkin' New York Blues), but that only references Woody's song "Pretty Boy Floyd". Can you point me to the Woody song that has the lyric about the fork and knive?

talking blues...its on old song form, probably older than the twelve-bar blues. it really sucks when people in the audience try to sing along, as it effs up the rhythm.

@boulderjames This song is tribute to Bob Dylan's "Talkin' New York" (2nd track, Dylan's eponymous first album), where he talks about moving to NYC to when folk singers were the thing.

@boulderjames The theme from The Beverly Hillbillies uses the same format too. It's Americana brother! Just like 12 bar blues...all the same but what differentiates it is the lyrics & the "noodling" within the framework.

beautifully delivered storytelling, in the tradition of jerry jeff walker & those before & after him. great to know the kids are carrying on in the family tradition *wink*

@boulderjames Todd has long stated that Jerry Jeff Walker was his inspiration to become a musician - I'd bet that it's a very intentional homage, tribute, & loving theft.

Woody Guthrie encouraged people to steal his music.

A lot of people did the talking blues back in the day. Listen to the song Talking Union by Pete Seeger. Pete even said Woody was the one that taught everybody how to do it. Woody would be proud that Todd is carrying on the tradition! This video is awesome.

@boulderjames I looked that song up. JJW Has so much stuff out there I haven't heard. But yes, that's a very similar tune. If you watch the entire video, Todd references a Woody Guthrie song and a Bob Dylan song. They both used that chord progression and talking style. Todd's just carrying on the tradition! :)
