A Cappella is a 1985 album by Todd Rundgren. The album is one of Rundgren's most unusual in that every sound is the product of the artist's voice. Rundgren employed overdubbing techniques and an E-mu Emulator (an early sampler), electronically manipulating the sound of his voice in order to mimic conventional rock instruments, handclaps, and other sounds. This unique approach to music making was later explored by artists such as Mike Patton and Björk.

A Cappella was finished in 1984 and slated for release on Bearsville Records later that year but with Bearsville's slimming artist roster and lack of successful artists Bearsville didn't want to take a chance releasing something they felt was too experimental and wouldn't sell so A Cappella was shelved. The label filed for Bankruptcy in 1985 and all remaining Bearsville releases were released by Warner Bros or dropped completely.

Todd used a Fairlight sampler computer on this recording, as any true fan would know. He may have used an Emu on some of the 'instrument' tracks, but he made extensive use of the Fairlight, which he demoed at a computer fair in Chicago in 1985. I was there for that and I met him and shook hands with him. I remember he was doing some amazing feedback stuff with a video camera that was hooked into the computer.

Love me some Todd. The note he hits at about 3:04 sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it. Beautiful.

Little or no sampling on this though, except maybe to stretch his range a bit. Not much though, despite all his falsetto high notes he's a natural baritone.

I was lucky enough to see Todd perform this at The Sage, Gateshead, in June 2005. It was the highlight of the evening. The man doesn't know what to do with his hands when he isn't playing an instrument, but that didn't matter. He all but reduced the entire hall to tears.
