@ Steven S yes "marginally progressive" but also marginally punk - this songwas an anthem that i marched to in '74 just before i heard the Ramones & was expelled from HS - it wasa release for all of my anger (in other words Todd understood me - even though the lyrics are silly as hell at times)

Heavy Metal Kids (Album "Todd" 1974) Todd RundgrenI can't resist posting this any longer...I know it's only marginally progressive but I can't help it! Listen to the guitar and tell me if it's Todd (as credited) or his buddy Rick Derringer making a visit to the recording session.

Perhaps their incredible artistry overshadows their emotion? In any case, the emotion is there

Strange choice of words. I see it exactly the opposite. To me commercial music is nothing but "exercise," as you put it, meaningless, mass-produced pap. Name a popular band, and it's a fairly safe bet they made it by playing it safe, grinding out the same old stuff. Frank and Todd---and Lennon, for that matter---followed their respective Muses, even if they ended up somewhere weird and non-commercial, precisely because they DID follow their hearts.

This could be a Tubes song. I'm puzzled by Rundgren, like I'm puzzled by Frank Zappa. They are proficient and creative but most of their music just sounds like exercise to me. Their hearts don't seem to be in it.

Proto punk from someone most people would describe as either a saccharin pop star or post hippie prog rocker.
