Goldeneye is my favorite Bond movie, don't care what folks say. When I was growing up, Pierce Brosnan was Bond. He's the face I'll always associate with the role. I just remember how I would catch all the Brosnan ones in theater with my parents and play the hell out of Goldeneye 64 and eventually 007:Nightfire on PS2. Going back and watching it after seeing other Bond movies, I really appreciate certain narrative steps they took to reboot the series. Supporting characters in Goldeneye have no qualms with challenging and openly criticizing not only Bond and his actions, but also the actions of western governments under the pretense of protecting democracy, such as the one James routinely operates on the behalf of. In an otherwise highly visual, spectacle-oriented series of films; I feel this one had a few smart things to say when the smoke cleared. Confronted by Alec, James is asked if all the destruction and honey-potting he's carried out is "For England?" and Bond gives us our answer with zero shame: This badass spy shit ain't for England, democracy, freedom or even saving the world...it's for Bond, and he will never be sated.
