Lyrics & Information

This was taken from the compilation album 'Whiskey In The Jar'. It was written about Phil Lynott's Grandma Sarah (whom he also named his daughter after and wrote another song called 'Sarah'). In my opinion this is one of the most tender and heartfelt songs you will ever hear from the rockers Thin Lizzy, it is not on youtube and is one of my personal all time favourites. Enjoy!

Lyrics :-

Captain's hair,

shone softly in the sun.

Rode on his best mare,

to Sarah.

Schoolboy eyes,

would stare in innocent fun.

Never told no lies,

he loved Sarah.

{Chorus}

Whispered by a bramble,

carried by a brook

to every fishers hook,

"Sarah".

Fragrant fields,

Playing croquet in the sun.

Nothing appeals

like Sarah.

{repeat chorus}

I find it amusing that Philip wrote a song for his grandmother (this one), a song for his mother (Philomena), a song for his two daughters Sarah and Cathleen, but he never wrote a song for his wife...lmao.

this is actually the first version,from Shades of a Blue Orphanage which was in 1972, the other Sarah came out in 1979 in album Black Rose: A Rock Legend. truly magnificent songs,they don't make them like they used to.

That is definitely Gary Moore. He was still looking for his sound in 72-73. It's obvious here that he was starting to dial it in.

Haven't heard this version in years! Bought this on compilation on cassette when I was about 13. By far the best version.

@uncleambient I actually think Gary Moore did the lead guitar on this one. It says so in the new expanded edition of "Shades", where some remixes were included, among them this song. Those were all made in 1977, by Phil, Gary, and Midge Ure.
