"And the carcass of the beast left over from the feastMay still be found haunting the kitchenAnd there's life in it yet, we may live to regretWhen the ones that we poisoned stop twitchin"good 'ol food poisoning ala leftovers, but I still don't get the refrain

small little voice in the ether................ is it perhaps about the demon drink, it's beauty and awesome feckless potential

There'll be laughter and tears over Tia MariasMixed up with that drink made from girdersAnd it's all we've got left as you draw your last breathAnd it's nice for the kids as you've finally got rid of themIn the St Stephen's Day Murders

just to solve the argument, there's no line about remains of his head.it is in fact this:"With his gin-flavoured whiskers and kisses of sherry,His best Chrimbo shirt slung out over the shop. While the lights from the Christmas tree blow up the telly,His face closes in like an old cold pork chop."Referring to getting cheerfully hugged and kissed by the jowly drunk old uncle, which if you've ever had it happen is one of those OH GAWD THE TRAUMA moments in many a childhood. Like the auntie who always pinches your cheeks, like you're a babby, right in front of all the sibs, and yer mum. This is very much in the vein of many other rather gruesome holiday songs. I love it.

Why must I fall in love with every beautiful Irish woman who sings rocking versions of Irish music?

I have done some research. I now find that I do agree that it is not about killing people, but rather wrens, and about getting drunk at Christmas. However, I was not condemning anything.

Believe what you wish, - since neither Paddy Maloney nor Elvis Costello are going to step in and tell us....but do some research before you condemn a very clever and rather wistful Irish tradition a disservice? Thankyou, Peace out. (I think the song is referring, tongue-in-cheek, to the tradition of Irish children going out on St. Stephen's Day to chase a wren until it died Thus you would "get rid of them" (the kids) while they went out to "murder" a wren) BUT i could be wrong......:-)

@mrtea56 Food poisoning does not cause you to twitch and die on the floor. As well as the line in the chorus going, "It's all we got left as they draw their last breath." Sounds like people are dying, as food doesn't generally breathe.

@brady9599 - you believe what you wanna believe, I have some history on this one. FWIW - the poisoning refers to (hopefully inadvertent) food poisoning...and 'it's nice for the kids as you finally get RID of them' is because as a kid you'd have to go home instead of staying at the G'Parent's for another night, and it's HAIR not HEAD...jeezuz google the lyrics and lighten up, it's a typically witty Irish/Scots song and if you've never had to drink Tia Maria/IrnBru cos it's the only 'poison' left

@redcoat43 Um, no. The murders reffered to here, are the murders of humans, hence the lines "The ones we poisoned stop twitching," "It's nice for the kids, cause you finally get rid of them," and the mention of "remains of his head."

@TheFireMonkey - I also am most fond of the Cheiftains' version, with Elvis Costello, who is the author. Great song, it is!

@MrMusicfan555 That may be because the rendition you speak of is the original version as that is who wrote it. This is the first time I've ever heard someone else sing it and I have to say I like the job they do but I still like the Cheiftan's version better.
