Not the best version of it. Not only it feels too slow and relaxed concerning the theme of the song, but they also dropped the most powerful verse (IMO) depicting Williamites' assault on Garryowen, Limerick.

IT'funny but an English gentleman who was very well read and a better man than most told me that the Battle Of The Boyne had nothing whatsoever to do with the Irish. In fact it was an English Army composed mostly of Scots under a Dutch Prince and the rest fighting in Ireland's backyard.

BOTANYBAY37 - "I loved him for himself alone"There's a play on words here. Himself alone - compare with "Ourselves Alone".This phrase translates into Irish as a certain phrase known by people all over the world who have no other knowledge of the Irish language.

DarthMeymar - the song is a lament told from the viewpoint of a fictional Irish girl during the time of the Williamite Wars. Ireland had sided with the legitimate Catholic King James II. The Protestant English parliament had just rebelled against him and declared the Protestant Dutch Prince William of Orange as the King of Britain and Ireland. Patrick Sarsfield was King James' general and even after James fled, he resisted William's mercenaries and rebels in Ireland with loyal British and Irish troops. The girl in the song has fallen in love with Donel, one of Sarsfield's soldiers and fought with him during the Siege of Limerick when he dies by her side. She grieves both his death and the defeat of King James' forces, as this will usher in an era in which Ireland undergoes centuries of persecution and oppression (read : The Penal Laws).Viva Mexico. God Bless Ireland and the San Patricios.

My ancestor was O'Hogan... Sarsfield's scout.... The williamite camp ladies liked O'Hogan,,, and told him the camp password which was "sarsfield". Sarsfield little army went west of Limerick City forded the Shannon River into Clare and attacked Williams Army at Ballyneety by coming north and behind. Patrick Sarsfield, Wolfe Tone, ad of course the galloping O'Hogan are my Heros.
