You can certainly hear the influence it had on 'Tommy'. But I've always felt that it's more directly related. After all, who is the captain the singer asks to return on Christmas Day? Could he be Captain Walker? Then there's this line: "He's crazy if he thinks we're coming back again". The implication is that there was a mutiny. In my mind the crew tossed Captain Walker off the yacht, stranded him somewhere (possibly Rael), and sailed away, probably right into a storm. So everyone thinks he's dead. Which leads to the opening lines of 'Tommy': "Captain Walker didn't come home. His unborn child would never know him". Well, that's how I imagine it. Of course, I could be completely wrong. I'm just wondering if anyone else sees it this way.

3:42 Interesting how one can hear that the ending section of "Rael 1" evolved into "Sparks" from Tommy.

Sure I like "I can see for miles" but the Who tried out Psychedelia like a suit that didn't really fit them, as did the Stones. They both went on to much better stuff once they worked their way out of of it. They both got a few good songs, and some crap albums out of it. Just my opinion.

Townsend played with lots of "Rael" themes - any one remember "Glowgirl"?

I wonder what Jacob would think of the song named after the land that his descendants would make holy.

It's nice that this is the number one video to pop up when you search Youtube for "Rael". Too bad for that cult.

We can't forget about A Quick One, While He's Away, when, according to Townshend, Tommy's parents were introduced.

Gosh it's nice to see this song get the Respect it has been waiting for since 1967! When I went to buy this Album in early 1968 (45 years ago!!) it was Sold Out, & I had to wait a week to get my copy! The owner of the Record Store had some fun with me, ( as I came in a couple of times asking for it ) saying " Sold Out of Sell Out!" & I Laughed with him & I have never forgot "that Day and Moment" that was the beginning of many WHO moments in my Life. I LOVE THE WHO! Thanks GrantJacobReinhardt
