Jo Moreland...lovely post. Ditto my family from Cork to Staylbridge...fought in the war and all settled there outside Oldham...the girls and what was left of the boys after the fighting...worked in the mills and sadly a lot of racism there despite their war service...the same welcome was inherited later by an Asian population who were to meet the same...lovely song and a great tribute to your mum and others...

Migration of the simple and brave into the human soul. Bless your ancestors, what was in them, is in you

It might have been about the Irish, I am Cooley, or it may have been about the Viking discovery of Newfoundland. The strangest cargo was Jesus, and you know what he did.

You are so right. I saw them in Manchester on Paddys night and they were brilliant but that was back in the 80's and then I took my daughter to see them in Preston. I dont understand why they are not bigger now than they were and we never hear about them.

I think this is about immigration. My Mum came from Ireland to England in the late 40's and was so young and beautiful. I look back and think of how brave she was. There was a lot of racism towards the Irish at that time. This song makes me think of how vulnerable, brave and strong she was.

So simple, so warm-hearted, so utterly unexpected, so brilliant.
