Eddie really sang it well, but Tom in his heyday sang it best. Petty's voice has the nuance and nasal delivery at different points which Vedder doesn't have. Vedder sings the song either soft or hard with feeling the whole time, while petty sings it more smoothly and evenly with more tone and treble. Both are good, but Petty is better. Check out the live version from 1980 when the song was still fresh and petty was in his prime.8 years ago
