WrittenNorman Whitfield and Barrett Strong The Undisputed Truth in 1971, which was nice, but when the Temptations got a hold of it, it was spectacular!!! "Papa Was A Rolling Stone went number one and earned the Tempts (Dennis Edwards, Richard Street, Melvin Franklin, Damon Harris and Otis Williams) three Grammy Awards! It is now an early 70's classic. Give a listen.

There are very few new bands, or singers for that matter, that can produce the kinds of Harmonies these guys and others like them created. Fewer still that would even stay together long enough to create a legacy without one wanting to hog the spotlight.

Whenever these groups from the '60s and '70s would perform live, I love how the people responsible for the music would rewrite the music for that particular performance. The music in this version of "Papa" has a strong jazzy, horn sound without the strings used in the recorded version. This version is a bit less funky, but more jazzy, while keeping the bluesy wah-wah guitar. The Tempts' vocal harmonies really drive it home. This performance is excellent.

All he left them was alone. Like by themselves. All he left them was alone by themselves without him.

Al Goodman was with The Moments and he had a WONDERFUL voice. I think better (I hesitate to say that) than Eddie and Curtis Mayfied. He died recently. If you don't know who he is...look him up.

I read that Damon worshipped Eddie. Spent years trying to sing like him. Got to sing with the Tempts at only 21 years old. It's a good story. Richard also has a good story. Long Live The Tempts.

Awesome performance! Without seeing this video I would have always assumed it was Eddie on the falsetto vocals. I love the Temps in my favorite color pink and the choreography is on point as always. Who would thought that a 7 minute song can be taken down to 3 minutes and still sound so good. Thanks for sharing!

I have to agree with your assessment. Damon was the one that came closest to Eddie's sound. Glen Carl Leonard was too high, sometimes shrill sounding and Ron Tyson tone and timbre was completely different from that of Eddie's. Damon even had some of Eddie's physical mannerisms down pat! LOL

I remember seeing Damon and the Young Vandals at the Famous Ballroom in Baltimore back in the day. He sang a lot like Eddie and was a perfect replacement for Eddie when he left the Tempts. No other Tempt has ever sounded as close to Eddie's voice than Damon. Especially not Ron Tyson.

RIP Damon Harris. My ex is a total deadbeat who owes thousands in child support. He never picked up the kids for visitation. Occasionally we were visited by police or private investigators because he had done something terrible. This song goes though my head every time I have to go to court to try to get blood from that turnip.
