A tribute to David Ruffin, formerly of The Temptations.

This is my homage to the endlessly talented Davis Eli 'David' Ruffin. Despite only being in The Temptations for 4 years 64-68, the talented Mississipian is still widely regarded as not only one of the best leads for the group, but one of the greatest soul singers of all time. Something that I beleive makes people warm to David, despite his personal (yet high profile) problems, is the fact that whatever he sings he always puts his whole heart into it. You can beleive every word he utters, he is one example why soul music is called 'soul'. His tall, sharp suited, bespectacled, slick image walk hand in hand with that voice of his. It was a hard choice of tracks to best showcase his talents, yet "All I Need" I think is the one which says everything about him. A sad song about, regret, sorrow, redemption and the ultimate realisation that 'she' is all he needs above anything else. His songs have been described as 'windows into his soul, exposing his greatest fears as a lover and a man. Even "happy" songs like "My Girl" brought out a vulnerability in his voice.' That is David Ruffin summed up, brother Jimmy (also a soul legend) is quoted as saying "he was never at peace", which may well account for his sad and untimely demise. I dont want to dwell on the sadder aspects of his life, but

rejoice in what he gave to us. I will say it is worth reading up on him, his early life in the Deep South, his gospel days, his solo career etc ttp://www.netglimse.com/celebs/pages/david_ruffin/index.shtml

Anyway, enjoy the track, and rate/comment.

Many thanks, Luke aka dalkey130388.

Here's a fun little anecdote about this song: I work in retail and we have to listen to "canned music" all day long, which pretty much sucks. However, I figured out how to rig my iPhone into the PA system one day and proceeded to play my iTunes, filled with Motown and Philly Soul music (my favorite musical genres). I spun through my playlist to randomly set it off and this song came up. Once it began playing, something amazing happened. I went outside the office to see employees AND customers dancing as if they didn't have a care in the world. One of my co-workers asked me, "Is this YOUR music? Now THIS is music to work by. Please keep playing it."

Time for another bit of soul, this one from the Gordy record label. The year was 1967. The song came out during the summer of love. From the Temptations at # 3177 with "All I Need". Is there a hint of psychedelia anywhere here? Just a hint? Nah-h-h-h-h, not on this recording. Just pure pop soul.

Did we know how fortunate we were to have them? No words are sufficient to describe their magic. There will never be another David Ruffin.

All I need is a monster record that should of went #1 on the r&b charts(it went #2)! Call me crazy but I always felt that David Ruffin was singing this song for Tammi Terrell! When the song was released, their relationship had just been broken up and even though at times they couldn't stand each other- they did truly love each other! In fact, Tammi Terrell on her deathbed told a friend to "take care of David" and David always kept multitudes of photos of Tammi for the rest of his life! All I Need is a testament to both of them!

EHDRock you couldn't have said it any better. "Our David gone from us. Nothing could be more tragic than to lose a talent of his magnitude. R.I.P beautiful David Ruffin. We will never ever forget". I can't get enough of David Ruffin's voice. His loss hurts. He was fly, had a monster voice and grand personality! H

*soul! strings! horns! bass! that motown sound!* what soul revue would be complete without something from *The Temptations*? certainly none the worse with the rich, catchy, and delightful *"All I Need"*! this 1967 track hit #8 on Billboard's Top 100 and was released on their album *The Temptations with a Lot o' Soul*. it features the critically genuine and emotive lead vocals of original Temptations frontman David Ruffin, who... i mean, damn, listen to the dude. he's feelin' it.#musiceveryday #oldschool #hitsvilleUSA

David voice is so convincing in this song how can anyone not forgive him. Who ever wrote this song had no idea how the temps would breathe life into this song - timeless classic- for any generation. David voice is like the sun rising out of the storm-just breaking its way through and lighting up the sky.

Tears of guilt run down my face, all I need is to hear you say you forgive me. We need some singers to sing like the Temptations, the music of today artist cannot even compete with the old time performers.

On this day in 1967 {May 28th} the Temptations performed a medley of "My Girl," "All I Need," and "(I Know) I'm Losing You" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'...At the time "All I Need" was at #10 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart...Following 'Sullivan' was the 'Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour'; and on that program the Association made their national TV debut and performed their debut charted record, "All Comes Mary"...
