The Supremes A Go-Go (1966) was the first album by an all female group to reach the number-one spot on The Billboard 200 album charts in the United States.

Included are two of the Supremes' Top Ten Billboard Hot 100 hits, the number-nine single "Love Is Like an Itching In My Heart", and the number-one "You Can't Hurry Love". Also contained on the album was one other original, "Put Yourself in My Place", as well as covers of songs by the Four Tops ("Baby I Need Your Loving", "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)", "Shake Me, Wake Me (When It's Over)"), The Temptations ("Get Ready"), Martha & the Vandellas ("Come and Get These Memories"), Barrett Strong ("Money (That's What I Want)"), The Isley Brothers ("This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak For You)"), Nancy Sinatra ("These Boots Are Made for Walkin'"), and The McCoys ("Hang on Sloopy").

Additional songs recorded for the album, but not released were "It's Not Unusual", "Mickey's Monkey", "Uptight (Everything's Alright)", "Can I Get a Witness", "In My Lonely Room", and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction."

LYRICS:

Put yourself in my place

If only for a day

See if you can stand

The awful hurt I feel inside

Put yourself in my place

For just a little while

Live through the loneliness

The endless emptiness

I go through

And when you lose a little sleep at night

Cause you ain't been treated right

Then you know heartaches are sad

Sitting by the telephone

Being left all alone

Then you know why Im feeling bad

Put yourself in my place.....

And when you're just about to go insane

Cause it hurts to love in vain

Ask a girl who's been in love

I believed your evil lyin'

Now I'm left alone and cryin'

Alone to count the stars above

Put yourself in my place

If only for a day

See if you can stand

The awful emptiness

I feel inside

Put yourself in my place

For just a little while

Why don't you try it

Why don't you try it

Why don't you try it baby

Put yourself in my place

If only for a day

Why don't you, why don't you

Why don't you try it

Why don't you try it baby

Baby try it.....

Put yourself in my place

I agree The original 1965 Elgins version gives me chills. The Isley's have more grit. I like the Northern Soul Chris Clark Version as well that came out in 65. This is a nice generic safe sounding version. Was great to fill out the album.

That never bothered me, cause The Andantes were much better singers....

You got it Paul. Everyone seems to always compare them, but each brought to The Supremes uniqueness and also they sang different songs unless they were in concerts, but still I salute you for comment. Mary also should have had success as a solo artist, but somehow the wheels that be never allowed it or just luck I guess, nevertheless she still performs around the world. Saw her several times and she is good.

The lead vocal is brilliant, and the background vocals are excellent. Enjoy it and try to stop stressing over things that happened -- or more likely did not happen -- 50 years ago.

One of my favorite B-sides ever. You know how as a little kid you play the B-side a lot (tired of what everyone else is listening to)? This was it for me!

bulldust. this song is gorgeous. don't care who was on it, it is fabulous. you guys over there really are sue happy aren't you. it's recorded music, part of the supremes catalogue and it is not for us to feel duped. we loved it then and knowing the andantes were on it well, just proves how important they were in trhe whole scheme of motown.

I honestly like the Elgins' version better. (The original)

this is minutiae at this point, but labelmates The Elgins had the first recording of this song as a b side in late '65.

One of the members at the Facebook Andantes group just asked if The Andantes were on this track & Louvain Demps confirmed that it is indeed them on here.

@michellesvideosuk The Andantes themselves (as well as others) have stated that going to court over back payments would be useless because logs were not kept of most of their recordings !! Also, have you not been paying attention to all of the books & articles written about the group where words like "hidden group", "secret group" are applied to them? Have you learned nothing from girl groups of the same period & how so many were cheated, but had no documentation to prove it.

@michellesvideosuk And just where did you get the privilege of seeing those recording logs?? Did it ever occur to you that The Andantes weren't always listed simply because it was a given that they would be on the recordings - were the Funk Brothers always listed on every recording as well...I don't think so. Seems to me that you go out of your way to trash The Andantes whenever you can. And last, but not least....stop screaming with all caps...it's really rude.

@wonderboyjoy actually, as you stated, often the singers themselves would over dub their own vocals, except in the Supremes case Diane often added her vocals to the harmony with Mary and Flo. Read Mary's book.
