For the many of us who followed (including traveling to do it) the Supremes in the post-Diana era, we quickly came to realize the act was ascending to a higher level, and just continued to do so.  It was exactly what Berry Gordy Jr. expected.   He felt he had found the right artist in Jean Terrell and had placed the Supremes in the most qualified hands he could offer, Frank Wilson, who immediately reinvented the group's persona and artistic profile with instant success.  When Jean Terrell and Lynda Laurence were out of the picture at the end of their contracts Mary stepped in and brilliantly brought in the brilliant Scherrie Payne and popular Cindy Birdsong and that combination clicked immediately with its own new dynamic.  It could have gone on forever but Motown's move to California, Gordy's interest in film and new young acts needing big promotion meant the Supremes  increasingly were on their own.  And knew it.  Neverthless, as anyone who saw them in the later years can attest, they were still brilliant.  Diana thought so too.

Dumb,Vegas arrangement, the intro sounded better than the girls, but the 3 look and move great.  What made the Supremes think Carpenters? ick

If there was ever a doubt that the lineup of Mary, Sherrie & Susaye was not SUPREME think twice! The Supremes were like a butterfly that will emerge beautiful unique and exquisite on each incarnation, Diana Ross was never indispensable quite contrary, she manufactured herself out of their cocoon and thrive from them, THE SUPREMES are the legacy, this is living proof!
