I can't think of another band of either that genre or similar success who had such a close relationship with their fans. During the pre-internet 1980s, that meant being part of a dedicated (but not fanatic) band of like-minded but diverse individuals, and being regarded as comrades and partners, not consumers.

I think the Stranglers were a great punk band in the 70s but evolved to be a great rock band. I'll be off to see them for the umpteenth time again next March.

I don't think that the Stranglers needed to be categorised. Even so, they were way above punk, which, essentially, didn't require the sort of talent that they had. Disagree with me if you like, it won't keep me awake.

i hate people that think the clash are the only punk band that paved the way.. i think the stranglers were THE REAL punks and they were way ahead of their time. unlike everyone else. theyve lasted longer than any punk uk bands as well
