V for Vociferous

I am from Manc, but live in a town with 2 clubs that have an obsession with never playing anything good. Still struggling to get the DJs to play this (or anything close).

This song is impossible not to bob your head to. A song unrestricted by time.

Sure, they're one of my favourite bands. Unless your tripping off your tits watching them live, objectively ian briwn does not have a strong voice and can be hit or miss. Notably a number of his vocal performances have been s shambolic because the roses' music emphasis melody whereas his solo stuff doesn't. I prefer the studio versions. That said, live, there isn't a rythym section that can touch squire, rein and mani.

Sounds like you something of a Stone Roses fan. I was in Hammersmith duing that time period. I went to many of their gigs. Except for coeachella they've sold out gigs everywhere they have played. I'm not saying they're the Beatles or the Rolling Stones for goodness sakes but everyone from Liam gallagher, thom yorke, Damon alburn as such have had bad gigs and don't get beaten over the head with it anywhere near as much as Ian Brown. I'll take my chances with The Stone Roses.

That's true, the Roses' popular following grew from the underground, and even when signed to Silvertone they never sold that many records, or made much money. It was only when Geffen got involved, after they broke through, that they had the chance to make it big in the commercial sense - but then they blew it. I'm not sure they had it in them to release 20 years' worth of records, their first album was of itself a unique event and of a time. Good to luck them now making cash with the gigs.

I'll agree with you to a point; one album is not enough but you list some titanic names like the Beatles, Dylan as such. My point is unlike the artists you mention the Stone Roses were labeled bad before the first sound check. Even when the album 'the Stone Roses' came out it got negative reviews before the NME even listened to it because of losers like Tony Wilson while Blur got fantastic press because they wer those 'nice middleclass boys'. Again, I agree with you to a point.

I'm not really interested in all that, I think it's just puff and spin and soundbites. What I am interested in is the music and the Roses are up there with the best, almost. The only thing that separates them from the very best is not talent, but application. One great album is simply not enough. The likes of the Beatles, Dylan, Springsteen etc etc have released dozens of albums of interesting work over decades. The Roses have done one great and one OK album. That's my view anyway.

If you were there in Manchester at the time, you knew that if you were born on the wrong side of Manchester you were sh*t. If you were on the right side of Manchester you could play sh*t and be called brilliant. Do you remember Tony Wilson? What he said about the Stone Roses? He called around and told others not to book them; that they were the wrong Look and sound as such. They just wanted to play gigs; they were already labled rubbish before they even got on stage.

Not sure what you mean about people taking snipe shots at Dylan - all I have heard is legions of artists from the beatles, neil young, clapton, springsteen through to modern day groups cite him as a major influence that changed music, and people like Scorcese make documentaries about him, and famous actors like gere, blanchett, ledger etc all want to be associated with him. Sure, some people have criticised, but as you say, he's one of the most covered artists of all time, so I can't agree
