The distortion never was an issue for me and was in fact a feature that appealed to me and without it the song wouldn't have the same feel. I love this song. I don't know about others, but it's actually a favorite of mine from that whole Machina era. I love the urgency of the lyrics at 1:48 to 2:07. It's interesting, I think it might have even fit well with the tracks on Pisces Iscariot.11 years ago

I have the original MP3's from 2001 and it's in stereo at least, and a lot better than this. But it's a killer tune which we all can hear already.. Talk about futuristic back in 2001! And some way away from the Machina lump of songs.11 years ago

no. no, it's not. first of all, vinyl can sound good to great, depending on the deck. second, the sound is so 'bad' here that it's an obvious artistic choice. the 'drums' in this track get the most of it, way more than the voice. if it were due to vinyl the voice would sound just as rotten. look at 'real love'. do you want to tell me that that one is distorted sounding because of the vinyl? why don't you people get a new hobby besides talking out your asses on topics where you are ignorant?11 years ago

you guys bickering about the bad mastering on this being responsible for the 'bad sound' are just completely off base and speaking from total ignorance. the sound is so garbled here that it's obviously intentional. look at 'real love' from the same record. obviously billy was wanting to experiment with distorting entire tracks for some of these songs. it's not because of 'digital clipping' that this track sounds so crazy. you're just wrong.11 years ago

@popejeffthefirst No, that clipping on the tracks is digital compression and distortion. Vinyl sounds "better" (more true to the analog sound) than cd and mp3 formats. Besides, I'm pretty sure it was an artistic decision by Billy to give it this sound, just listen to Adore: most of the rhythm tracks have a similar sound.12 years ago

@speshojk1 - They were mastered by Virgin, but they refused to release another double album apparently... That's why the four tracks that were released (the ones on Rotten Apples/Judas O) were "normal" quality. Billy released the whole thing for free as a "F**k You" to Virgin.12 years ago

The reason the song sounds so rough is because it was never properly mastered. It was intended for release on Machina II: Friends and Enemies of Modern music, but after Virgin canned the record all these great tracks just got ignored. Its a tragedy; there are so many radio worthy, awesome songs on Machina II that were never truly finished.13 years ago
