Try, Try, Try (alternate take)

MACHINA II (EP3) (2000)

Written by Billy Corgan

Performed by The Smashing Pumpkins

Lyrics:

Pop tart

What's the matter?

Did you lose

What you're after?

For your tears

I'm still singing

For your fears

I am ringing

From Houston

On a downer buzz

Like you said it's

Just because

You'll detonate your long lost kisses

Wished on the eve of forgotten blessings

Start your way for some new impression

To try to hold on

To this heart

A little bit stronger

Try to hold on

To this love alone

Try to hold on

For this heart's

Never been broken

So try to hold on

Try to hold on

Pop tart

Did you flatter

When they spoke

Of my disasters?

At thirteen

I lost my compass

But I'm sure

It's all accomplished

As desires

On my ghost trains

Like you said

When it rains

It pours down the back of the bitter son

Desperate for love and loves everyone

In my mother's arms no simple home

Conspires to hold on

To this heart

A little bit closer

Try to hold on

To this love alone

Try to hold on

And we know

If we go under

We just can't let go

No, no

Pop tart

Will it matter

If I lose

And just shatter?

Will you cry

And keep crying?

Will I die

And keep dying?

In Tokyo

With sad tragic blues

Like you said it's

How you use

'Cause someday we'll know if this even matters

Our rings and maze and simplicity

When can we laugh and take all the credit?

And know we'll go free

With our hearts

A little bit stronger

Try to hold on

To this love alone

Try to hold on

For this heart's

A little bit frightened

Just try to hold on

Just try to hold on

Just try...

It's unfortunate that Corgan hasn't found the relevancy he's been wanting since he originally reformed the band, but he really is capable of putting out some great tunes. I was actually really surprised by Oceania. Not nearly his greatest album, but definitely the greatest of all the new stuff. I still think the trinity of the original 3 albums were where he was doing anything and everything in his power to be incredible, spending 12 hour days with the band each and every day. As much as James and D'Arcy didn't contribute as much as Corgan did in writing the lyrics and compositions, it's undeniable that their collective work was stronger than what Billy has been putting out for the past few years, Oceania included. When he was in his 20's, he was representing that gen X fuck-the-system mentality, but now that he's in a different point in his life, his music isn't as impacting and the raw emotion and energy doesn't come through like it used to. He's going for a more artistic approach and in some ways more creative which is awesome and is why I'm still a fan. The problem with that though, is those types of artists often don't achieve the things that he's been professing that he wants to achieve, which are all things he had achieved in the 90's. I'm confident he can make great music still and I keep hearing glimpses of it, it just isn't quite there 100% with the new stuff. I will give it to him though, just about every pumpkins album sounds different and you can tell he gives it his all.

I don't want to sound pretentious but sometimes i have the feeling that those fans criticizing adore and machina I and II aren't real fans. Both these final albums of the previous version of the pumpkins were highly emotional and perfectly expressing the experiences of the band members. If adore if full of nostalgia and sadness, basically showing the way they've dealt with death and separation ( one band member died, one was fired, one broke up, one got divorced and also his mother died), mach

I have no clue why people are complaining about the Machina era, it was amazing. People probably just wanted to be hipster at the time because the style changed...

I agree, the fact that he published this alternate take is proof that Billy Corgan thinks so too. I think leaving this one as an alternate was more of a stylistic decision on Billy's part. If you listen to the finalized version of this song, it fits in perfectly with the mood of the rest of its album. I really think Billy builds his albums around a particular texture. It's almost like listening to a different band, from album to album.
