"New Slang" is a song by The Shins. It was released as a 7" single in 2001, and subsequently appeared on their album Oh, Inverted World. It achieved mainstream popularity after its inclusion in the soundtrack of the film Garden State and its appearance in a McDonald's television commercial. James Mercer has stated in an interview with In Dublin Magazine that, at the time he wrote the song, he wanted to get out of his "home town, job, relationship and life".

The song was talked about in the film Garden State: Sam (Natalie Portman) passes a pair of headphones to Andrew (Zach Braff) and says, "You gotta hear this one song—it'll change your life." It was also featured on the Scrubs episode "My Balancing Act", and appeared on the series' 2002 soundtrack.

The song is featured in the episode "Eloise" of the television series The Sopranos and the "Him" episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

The song was featured in an episode of Bargain Hunt.

The track was named in the 2008 book The Pitchfork 500: Our Guide to the Greatest Songs from Punk to the Present.

Pitchfork listed the song at 62 on its 500 best tracks from 2000 to 2009.

The Shins performed "New Slang" on Saturday Night Live on January 13, 2007.

The song is available as downloadable content for Guitar Hero World Tour and the Rock Band series of videogames.

Banquet Records puts on a weekly indie and alternative night at the Hippodrome in Kingston, London named after the song.

In 2010, the song was voted the 72nd greatest of all time by Triple J listeners in Australia.

Other versions

There are two live versions of the song: one performed with Iron & Wine, which appears on the December 14, 2004 7" single release of "Fighting in a Sack", and another that appears on the "Know Your Onion" single.

[edit] Music video

The music video was directed by Lance Bangs and features the band re-enacting the cover art of other bands' albums, including Zen Arcade and New Day Rising by Hüsker Dü, Let It Be by The Replacements, Moon Pix by Cat Power, Double Nickels On The Dime by The Minutemen, Squirrel Bait's first album, Sonic Youth's Sister and Slint's Spiderland.

Leaving Sub Pop, Aural Apothecary, the future (2008--present)

On June 20, 2008, the band announced that they were leaving Sub Pop Records for James Mercer's own label, Aural Apothecary.[8]

According to an interview published on Pitchfork Media on May 6, 2009, "keyboardist Marty Crandall and drummer Jesse Sandoval had been replaced by Ron Lewis from Grand Archives and Eric D. Johnson of Fruit Bats on bass and Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse on drums".[9] In the same interview, Mercer said the next record "is still in its very early stages" and that he's "aiming for a release early next year". Regarding the lineup change, he commented that "I started to have production ideas that basically required some other people", but that he "wouldn't say I'd never work with them again".[10]

In a lengthy interview published in The Portland Mercury, former drummer Jesse Sandoval claimed that his departure from the band was not due to "aesthetic differences", but rather that he was fired, saying, "I understand [Mercer is] probably doing it out of respect for me reading interviews, it might be hard for him to say it, but... I got fired. There's no other way of looking at it."[11]

On July 26th, 2011, the band announced via Facebook that they will soon release news about upcoming shows and new music.

On August 1, 2011 Pitchfork reported that The Shins would be releasing an album in 2012 on Mercer's Aural Apothecary Label, via Columbia Records. The Shins also announced additional tour dates for their North American tour. The new band backing Mercer on this tour include singer/songwriter Richard Swift, Modest Mouse drummer Joe Plummer, Yuuki Matthews of Crystal Skulls, and singer/songwriter Jessica Dobson.

I enjoy doggie clips online. They truly cause me to grin. HOWEVER most people today are incrementally KILLING their family dogs - without knowing it! The stuff that they insert in pet food leads to cancer malignancy and makes pet dogs die young. I came to understand the tough way. My dog died aged 5. To conserve your dog's life look for Double Life Dog Diet (Try looking in Google.)

Wow, pretty sure that part in the beginning was filmed on top of Rocky Butte in Portland, Oregon. I live just at the base of that little mountain.
