I think the genius of The Selecter somehow resides in the indirectness of their tunes, and the subtle nuances and accents in their tunes. The Specials' debut and Madness' debut had very straight-on and direct songs, but The Selecter's debut was indirect, slightly more inaccessible. Could not appreciate this when I was a kid, but now I understand. Very cool.
