The Saints are an Australian rock band, which formed in Brisbane in 1974, founded by Chris Bailey (singer-songwriter, later guitarist), Ivor Hay (drummer), and Ed Kuepper (guitarist-songwriter). Alongside mainstay Bailey, the group has had numerous line-ups. In 1975, contemporaneous with United States' Ramones, The Saints were employing the fast tempos, raucous vocals and "buzz saw" guitar that characterised early punk rock. With their debut single, "(I'm) Stranded", in September 1976, they became the first punk band outside the US to release a record, ahead of better-known acts including the Sex Pistols and The Clash. They are one of the first and most influential groups of the genre, according to Bob Geldof, "Rock music in the seventies was changed by three bands—the Sex Pistols, the Ramones and The Saints".

I am a Springsteen fan, but the original is better. The singer is so authentic Australian.

Great song by a great Aussie Band. And a great compliment by the Boss to cover the song.

Why the hate when a song gets covered? Be honest, if you just had the lyrics to look at and didn't know who wrote them, what would your first guesses be as to who the author was? Bruce does an awesome cover of this song because it is a perfect fit, just like Johnny Cash was one of the few people who could cover NIN's "Hurt" and not sound like a whinging cunt. BTW, I really like the Saints version. From a band that gets credits for the rise of Punk, this is a solid blue-collar Pop anthem.

Doesn't that sound a lot like John Mellencamp's "Small Town"?

Still a great band, even though they changed their sound over the years from being a buzasaw punk band, to a more rock oriented sound.

What a great song! I like Springsteen and thank the dude for opening me to this band! What a cool band.Fuckin Bruce, man. Gets stereotyped as a cliche rock star, this dude listens to some random shit and pays tribute to it. Punk, new wave, rock n roll; guy just loves music lol.Cheers from Chicago!

As a Springsteen fan, naturally I prefer his version. But I really like this version, too. It's very good.

This original is the best for me, but I do have a lot of respect for the way Bruce covered this song. He kept its soul far better than I would have expected. My only question is why he cut out the " last pack of foreign cigarettes"? Maybe its un-American?

Nice of "The Boss" to include it in his concert though. And I mean that, cause I think it introduced The Saints to a whole new generation that even in Brisbane would never have heard of them.

it is a play on words and the song and band are culturally important part of Aussie history.
