Awwww, MR Charlie Watts. One of the most respected drummers in rock history. The "drummers drummer". They all love Charlie. Saw them live few months back and Watts was great. The "engine" of The Rolling Stones beat canacer, never moaned about it,,,,,and just keeps going. All respect to the living legends.

The world has been having enough time with the fact that Keith Richards is still alive...you honestly expect them to face the above fact any easier?

Ronnie always strikes me as being the ultimate people-pleaser. He just wants EVERYBODY to have a good time. In many ways, I think that he's the reason this band has managed to survive since the late 1970s and he doesn't get nearly enough credit for that.

Hey, look at it this way. At least Mick and Ronnie never went for plastic surgery!

I think that Mick and Keith know that too on a gut level. That cancer scare that Charlie had in the mid-2000s propelled a lot of the energy that they put into "A Bigger Bang". Keith has always acknowledged Charlie's importance, saying that without him, it's a different band. He also called "A Bigger Bang" Charlie's finest hour and I'm inclined to agree.

Think of it this way too: maybe the mirage and reps act as shields to keep prying eyes away from the people they want to be. Mick has certainly said as much in the interviews that he's given. Keith, I get the impression just doesn't care anymore, provided that he ever did. Ronnie always strikes me as the guy who wants everybody to be happy. Charlie is just...Charlie. I never can shake the impression how much he genuinely loathes the spotlight.

What a contrast between these two...Charlie, the laconic drummer, and Woody, the fidgeting, can't-stay-still-for-a-second guitar man. It's a great push-pull dynamic between the two of them.

Charlie is the rock of the band and has been from the start...a fact that everybody from Mick on down acknowledges.

I don't think these guys give death the middle finger. It's been too big a part of their story (check out the track from "Goat's Head Soup" "Dancing with Mr. D" if you don't believe me). No, I think they just take the Baron Samedi approach to death: enjoy your life to the fullest because one day, it's going to be gone. But, yeah, even with that, you DO wonder how they do it!

Honest to God, Harrison, right? Just saw my tenth ever show, think 8th tour since first in '81 in Detroit when I was 16, at HP Pavillion in San Jose last Wednesday night, and to answer your question ("You gotta wonder how they do it"), they just MIGHT have made a deal with that Fallen Angel, offereed up some Sympathy and some Taste. How else to explain these 67-72 year old ex heroin, coke, crack and alcohol addicts (to say naught of cigarettes) still flat kicking ASS live? Enjoyed $85 ticks.
