@canadiangopher Afghanistan has NO known oil. Vietnam has only a little and is ranked 43rd in the CIA's list of countries with known oil reserves. No.1 in that list is Saudia Arabia, of course. No.2? Canada. Iraq is 4th. USA is 13th.Afghanistan has deposits of some very valuable and rare minerals, including cobalt, lithium and a range of "rare earths". It has the potential to be "the Saudi Arabia of lithium" (said the NY Times). BUT NO OIL. You're right to condemn criminal wars, of course, but it helps to get your facts right. They say generals are always fighting the last war, not the current one. Opponents of these wars should be able to do better than that! With the USA now fracking itself to bits, oil is definitely yesterday's object of imperialist klepomania. Keep your eye on the lithium, and note how little investment is made in alternative battery technologies while there remain such huge reserves of lithium in Afghanistan. As for Cobalt, that is less rare, but 50% of world production is from countries in Africa, now largely sewn up by China's economic, unarmed imperialism. That leaves Canada again... and Afghanistan. Canadian miners have to be paid decent wages, those in Afghanistan don't and are ripe for exploitation.

Songs and other media about the Second World War tend to focus on the honor and skill of combat, the American Civil War tends to focus on the tragedy of a nation divided. World War One songs, poems, and movies are just...sad. Great video, awesome song.

I agree that I have no interest in what "Johnny Law" thinks.

My comment was not directed at you personally or your comment in particular. I just get tired of the bullshit nonsense comments about American imperialism when the subject of the song is from a time when America was pretty much isolationist... People, open a history book now and again....

You seem to have a mix-up between your "Nation's enemies" and the enemies of your government and mine. They are not the same. Your Nations enemies are the ones sending you to fight. Fight them, and you defend freedom. I carry the gun and carry the fight to my own enemies, not to the "enemies" of whatever corporate lobbying groups happen to want war in whatever resource-rich country they want to send me to. It is impossible to fight for freedom and still stay on the "right side of john law".

I just went over and actually fought, sounds like you just acted like a "anarchist" and got arrested. I will stay out of jail and on the right side of john law, I will continue to carry the gun, and carry the fight to my nations enemies.

I know that. You didn't hit the "reply" button, but from the "blind faith" reference, I think I can safely assume you were talking about my comment. My comment (posted over a year ago) was a reply to a few handfuls of people on this board saying to others that they were wrong and un-patriotic for not "supporting the troops" (which means wanting them to come home alive) and should "shut up, because they are fighting for your freedom". MY COMMENT was about that, I now what the song is about.

Oh, and by the way, in case you didn't notice, the comment you were responding to is a year old, and in response to about a million different comments on here saying (in response to others' comments) "if you don't like the war, shut up, 'cause we're fighting for your freedom". Some people even pointed out the "irony" of the fact that someone was using his/her "freedom" to not "support" those who are "fighting for that freedom". When you see "posted 1 year ago", you might not know the context.

Nothing "punk" about killing over a million innocent men women and children because you follow orders. I have defended MY OWN freedom all my life, and NOT with a keyboard. I have defended others against impossible odds, because it was right. Have you ever been to prison? Been tear-gassed? Have you had teeth smashed by cops with clubs and flashlights? Had a gun stuck in your face? A blade stuck in your gut? If you answered 'no' to any of these, YOU are the one acting tough behind a keyboard.

oh youre so fucking punk rock mr punk rock king... i grew up in the third world in south east asia and coming to US soil is fucking luxury. if poor men had this much courage to fight for something be it false or sincere, its more human than anything else. all you have is a fucking keyboard and a narcissistic things even in tragic things such as war. vietkong didnt threaten our freedom but since youre so punk...u should see it as threatening other humans collectively. fuck you.

The song and the video are about World War I, NOT the current state of international relations. I want to pay my respects to the soldiers who fought in the Great War. How many of us would have the stones to climb out of a trench into no man's land during a gas attack to face the machine guns and artillery of an entrenched enemy. Call that blind faith if you want, I call it courage.

This song coupled with this video makes me cry every single time, and that is not an easy thing to do. Thank you for your gut wrenching montage to this superb song.
