THE RAVENS - MAHZEL (Also spelled Mazel) - Great Upbeat Early Doo Wop! video free download

The Ravens song that never gets posted. "Mahzel" (Yiddish for "luck"), with Leonard Puzey, Jimmy "Ricky" Ricks singing bass, and Maithe Marshall sharing lead (featuring Ricky). The writers of "Mahzel" (Artie Wayne and Jack Beekman) came to a Ravens' rehearsal with the song.

Pianist/Arranger Howard Biggs started playing around with it and worked out an arrangement. They all thought it was "cute".

Why, however, would two writers of an essentially Jewish song first show up at the doorstep of a black R&B group detouring from their route to present it to Artie Shaw? Possibly because they were friends of National Record's Al Green, the Ravens new label.

Any idea who the musicians were on this session in addition to Howard Biggs? Thanx.

The notes with the video indicate that the song was written by Artie Wayne and Jack Beekman; however, the label credits it to Kern and Hammerstein? Anybody know the story here?

This song was released in 1947. Too early to be called “Doo Wop”, which was more late 50s/early 60s. Still, a great song by what was an amazing group that became the model for for many others that followed.

Benny Goodman's orchestra recorded the popular "mainstream" version - but this was somewhat successful on the rhythm & blues charts, recorded on April 24, 1947 (the same session that produced "Old Man River").

I have a 78 by this same group titled: Be I Bumble Bee. It plays good but I collect early rockabilly & pop of late fifties. I also like early Surf guitar records, by ANY one.
