As a music genre, ragtime enjoyed mainstream popularity from 1895 until about 1918. Since then, it has experienced numerous revivals, particularly after the release of the caper film *The Sting* in 1973. It's amazing to me that every single piece of ragtime sheet music Scott Joplin ever wrote says in giant letters at the top of the page DO NOT PLAY FAST. Yet I have NEVER heard one of these songs played at the leisurely pace they are supposed to be played at, except by me, who apparently alone among piano players, can READ.
