The Pentangle

Cruel Sister (1970)

1. A Maid That's Deep in Love

(traditional)

I am a maid that's deep in love

But, yes, I can complain

I have in this world but one true love

And Jimmy is his name

And if I do not find my love

I'll morn most constantly

And I'll find and follow Jimmy thro'

The lands of liberty

Then I'll put up my yellow hair

Men's clothing I'll wear on

I'll sign to a bold sea captain

My passage I'll work free

And I'll find and follow Jimmy thro'

The lands of liberty

One night upon the raging sea

As we were going to bed

The captain cried farewell my boy

I wish you were a maid

Your rosy cheeks, your rosy lips

They are enticing me

And I wish dear God with all my heart

A maid you were to me

Then hold your tongue dear captain

Such talk is all in vain

And if, and the sailors find it out

They'll laugh and make much game

For when we reach Columbia shore

Some prettier girls you'll find

And you'll laugh and sing and court with them

For courting you are inclined

It was not three days after

Our ship it reached the shore

Adieu my loving captain

Adieu for evermore

For once I was a sailor on sea

But now I'm a maid on the shore

So adieu to you and all your crew

With you I'll sail no more

Come back, come back my own pretty maid

Come back and marry me

I have ten thousand pounds in gold

And that I'll give to thee

So come back, come back my own pretty maid

Come back and marry me

It's amazing to me that almost no one on this side of the Atlantic - I'm in Canada - has ever heard of Pentangle or that other wonderful Brit-folk group Fairport Convention. Everyone on the planet should hear this music at least once before they die.

I am 60, listened to all genres of music in my youth, and now, I actually NEVER HEARD OF THIS GROUP.  My husband has been talking about them for YEARS!!  I had to hear a piece from their album.  Not too impressed at all.  I love the Celtic style, 100% and this really doesn't cut it.  Not sure what he sees in it, except for a long ago memory.......

Person put it up as a playlist rather than one file.  My first exposure to Pentangle  was from cuts from this album.

"rosy lips and ruby cheeks" isn't that from the song reynardine? I know bert jansch did a version of that song solo and it had those lines. pretty cool. folk is awesome

@multidean thanks. The Famous Flower of Serving-Men by Martin Carthy was on you tube but it's now gone! Awesome song make the hair on your neck stand up & bring a tear to the eye. The story is reversed he poses as a woman. Anyone got that please upload it. The only bit on you tube of this song is a 1 min intro the guitar part. The king of laois by the Chieftains has also gone from you tube.

Other great songs by Pentangle - The lonely mountain (not on you tube at the mo) Willy O Winsbury - The hunting song - Rain & snow - Paddy's song aka the Celtic Wiccan (think that's what it's called) I'll be adding these to my play-list (favourites)

The most beautiful music & voice to match. Has brought a tear to my eye more than once..yet also heart warming. One of my favourite of theirs. Can imagine my Irish ancestors travelling to the land of liberty (USA) I suspect. While some came to England.

I was introduced to this wonderful group by one of those 60's compilation discs. Pentangle did Pete Seeger's Turn, Turn, Turn. I've managed to get a few CDs by Pentangle, but can't find the one that's from. Anyone know? I like this group enough I'd get anything by them. I'm listening to the BBC sessions pretty heavy lately, and there's some excellent videos from there posted here.

Wow, THIS is a total flashback! I think I wore out this album playing it over and over back in the day... Thanks for posting it!
