Any John Darnielle rendition of this song is my favorite. I first heard this when I first discovered the song's name (I knew the song, I'd listened to it a handful of times and I began listening to it a lot when I learned the name), and when I found it on an old album listing, I basically thought "man it'd be kickass if this was the ace of base song".It was amazing to listen to John Darnielle, the guy behind songs like "Snow Owl" and later on "Steal Smoked Fish", crank out an acoustic guitar cover of "The Sign". And it wasn't bad, either - you can tell in this recording, or his live versions (the Bottom of the Hill 2008 one, anyway - the only live one I've heard tbh) that he loves this song. He loves Ace of Base, and he legitimately likes this song, and it really shows when he performs it.I love when bands do really energetic covers of songs they like. It's why I like hearing the Mountain Goats cover "The Sign", and it's why I like Counting Crows' cover cover of Meet On The Ledge (it's a 3 minute long rock-out, I love it).
