I reckon a lot of it is down to the fact that for the most part he just records straight onto a tape deck. No messing with production, and so no worrying about fitting in with whatever sound scape is in vogue. Leaving him to simply focus on writing the timeless music we all love and turn to in our droves when our relationships inevitably fail ;)
