"No I Can't," by the Mountain Goats

Off of the 1993 EP, "Transmissions to Horace," hi-fi version available on "Bitter Melon Farm."

Let me know if you have any requests.

you bought me some chocolates.

and you bought me a rose.

and you brought me a paper bag.

and you brought me a lamp.

thank you for the chocolates.

thank you for the rose.

thank you for the paperbag.

thank you for the lamp.

(now i have everything i need.) x4

you brought me a sofa.

and you brought me some books.

and you brought me a filing cabinet.

and you brought me a panasonic dx4500.

thank you for the sofa.

thank you for the books.

thanks for the filing cabinet.

i don't know what i..

i don't know what i.. ever did without it.

(now i have everything i need.) x4

you came by. and you came in.

and you let the wind in.

it must be cold outside.

we stared out, through the sliding glass door.

but i'd forgotten what we were looking for.

thank you for coming by.

it's nice to see you once in a while.

thanks for the coat i forgot to mention.

i've been freezing in here.

i've been freezing in here.

(now i have everything i need.) x4

yeah!

+izekielsboredtv It could have different meanings depending on how it's sung and how the listener experiences it.

I always come here on the 17th of December. Happy 17th of December, John.

He changes it every time.

lyrics are definitely wrong... but I've heard him sing it the way this guy has in the description. I think he changes some details in his songs.

Not sure if this is a sarcastic response to the crappy gifts others give, or the feeling that no matter how crappy or pointless the gift is, if it's given by the person i your life that you truly love, it is an amazing gift. Probably the former, but still.

John never has specific lyrics. if you listen to him sing the same song in 2 different recordings, he only ever says the same general idea. for example "wound in your head"-"hole in your skull" "eastern sun" "setting sun"

I think it's meant to be like a polite response to the gifts, as in, "No, I can't accept all these things, you really shouldn't have gone to so much trouble", except that underneath the nice response to the presents the narrator genuinely feels that they can't take any more of them (since they're just hiding the fact that the relationship's falling apart). In the same way as "now I have everything I need" means both "thanks" and "please stop buying me things."

There is no such thing as wrong lyrics if John sings them.

John changes them every time he sings the song. I think these are the lyrics to another version of this song, maybe from Bitter Melon Farm.

I've always wondered how the title related to the actual lyrics. Anyone have any ideas?

What's up with the lyrics? I mean, I'm not complaining- it's not a big deal. It is odd though...

The issue is that the person who was kind enough to upload this video also uploaded an alternate version but they carelessly featured the different lyrics from that video instead, making the assumption that John had not changed them; an easy mistake which is of little concern.
