Darnielle is a terrible vocalist in the same way that Bob Dylan is a terrible vocalist. His voice is an aquired taste that is perfectly suited for his music. As for a terrible lyricist, there is no way to contest that. If you can't see the beauty and strong emotions in his lyrics, then there's nothing I can do for you.15 years ago

The story on the performance of "No Children" they are talking about is that John was sick that night, and loads of people kept yelling out for him to play it, but it's one that he really has to belt out, and he couldn't since he was sick. The audience agreed to sing it for him, however (hence the reason he actually listened to it when he doesn't listen to his own shows.)
