Neil Young played guitar on 4 Monkees tracks You And I, As We Go Along, Smile and That’s What It’s Like Loving You. Stephen Stills though being turned away as a Monkee (well Stills says he didn't and was just trying to sell them some songs), he did end up playing guitar on a track called Do I Have to Do This All Over Again.

Davy did sing some pretty schlocky and schmaltzy songs, but like in the case of "You and I" (from Instant Replay), he shows us that he could really belt out the rockers too.

I keep driving myself batty, trying to figure out whether or not some of this song is grammatically incorrect. Lol. ;)

A couple of reasons maybe why (my guess based on listening on a PC and being mostly familiar with their big hits, not their deep cuts on LPs) this didn't become a smash hit on the pop charts may be due the song itself not having a strong hooky chorus, and possibly Davy's vocals not being out in front of the mix as much as on his better known hit songs, and that the guitar adds an edgier sound taking away that glossy pop polished production feel of their earlier hits. Just my 0.02

Who woulda thunk it? Neil Young!

Neil Young is the guitar player on this.

Incidentally, DerekBayRoberts1, Davy did not write the second "You and I" in 1996. It was originally written with Micky for the 1976 Dolenz, Jones, Boyce & Hart album.

Derek, if it's the one you're thinking of, they're two different songs

I can't fathom why this wasn't the single for Instant Replay. The horrible Boyce and Hart "Last Train" retread sunk the album.

he wrote another song in 1996 with the same title. never knew why he did that. it was a good song but why the same title?

How this song has remained in obscurity, even for most Monkees fans, is beyond any logical reason. This song has EVERYTHING. Great lyrics that fit the Monkees and bands in general that come and go. Fantastic lead guitar work by Neil Young. It's the perfect Davy song. Maybe it's just to hard rockin' for those looking for more poppy songs? Who knows, but it's a great track and more proof that the Monkees output is filled with great songs that vary greatly in range from one another.

It is indeed. And Stephen Stills plays lead guitar on Long Title: Do I Have To Do This All Over Again.

@imarockmelon, you can say that again. And easily one of their edgiest.

One of their best songs, in my opinion.
