One of the greatest doo wop songs ever, not just in my opinion as it has been ranked the third greatest behind The Five Satins - In The Still Of The Night and The Penguins - Earth Angel. I rememeber the first time I heard these guys I thought they were black, as their style is not like the Crew Cuts white bread doo wop. One of the stills in the video will show you their names - and it goes to show that whilst they were not an integrated group like the Del Vikings, they were a mix of Irish, German, Spanish and Italian, singing in a more recognisably black style. Anyway, whilst the song was not a commercial and national hit at the time, it has endured the passing of time and is definitive doo wop.

I had the same thinking back in the 50's about this song and others, it's from a Black Group, but i was wrong. Some people thought Elvis was black just because the way he sang, but they were also wrong, but it was All Great Rock and Roll music that will always be here forever, "Tonight Tonight" by the Mello Kings was one of the All Time Greatest.

"The Mello-Kings", the pride of Mt.Vernon NY (westchester county) recorded this undisputed "Do-Wopp" CLASSIC in 1957. I LOVE this song. Originally they called themselves "The Mello-Tones" but soon after the release of "Tonite-Tonite" the group had to change its name as another group was already recording as "The Mello-Tones". Not a problem, "The Mello-Kings" worked just fine. Headed up by The Scholl brothers, the late Bobby (RIP) and Jerry with mgr. & musical arranger Dick Levister (RIP) and the rest signed on with the HERALD lable and went on to record this beautiful record (written by Bill Myles) in 1957. Beautiful song to slow dance to! This is a great song with smooth-tight -back ground harmony and a wonderful, almost yearning lead by the late Bobby Scholl. Again, this was and is a GREAT song/record that spans the generations and it will ALWAYS be a CLASSIC! In my opinion this song, no doubt, is one of the best TOP-5 "DO-WOPP" songs of all time! It has always been a very popular record/song in the NY/NJ/ & CONN. area. Even though "The Mello-Kings" were never able to repeat this success due to lack of material, line-up changes, & the lack of strong distribution, ect..."Tonite-Tonite" is their legacy and what a great song it will always be. Thank you and God Bless "The Mello-Kings" for the music and the memories..........
