This compilation covers the early years which provided the foundation for Berry Gordy's achievement of creating the biggest African-American owned business in the US. As music historian Bill Millar put it: 'Within three years, using only local artists, Gordy pushed gross sales of his company's products to more than four million annually. He did so by giving his performers a sound, a style, an act and, above all, pride and prosperity.'
