I just saw your comment while looking at different versions of this song. I'm doing a video based on this song - it haunted me so much! It should be a few months and you will see it posted here. My idea is a little different ( the person isn't dead) but that is a great idea too!

I believe that this song tells the story of a man who woke up to there wife/partner/mother, or someone who is important to them and living with them, leaving them a note saying i'll be back by three. I think they are trying to say that the person died when they were out, but the man refuses to leave the house until the person comes home, because they are grieving the loss and refuse to accept the fact that the person is gone.

I think the narrator is a ghost, who's with me on it? He was an invalid, he died before she got back home and now he's a ghost just rattling around in this goddamn house. She left him a note--"Do you need anything?" He'd have had to call her on her cell phone, or she'd call him, for the list of anything he needed. Maybe he did call, even, an empty call by a ghost. The feedback thing with the cellphones kind of underscores him slipping away. Just a thought. This is one haunting song!

@narcoman2 Exactly, a basic feedback loop. Great party trick.

hes using the phone to create a reverb effect via feedback - not interference. Very cool.
